I saw it yesterday with Anna, and it was fantastic. Having seen the first two, I was worried. I'll admit that. The first one was so fantastic that it is, probably, one of my favourite 'action' movies out there. The second one fell very short to me. It didn't feel like a Mission Impossible movie. Right from the start where we see Ethan Hunt with long hair..
LOL ok, maybe not then... But everything about that movie was over the top for me, from the dorky rock remix version of the theme song, to the slow motion "love" scenes where Ethan just stares into the eyes of the cute burnette. They even dorked up Luthor with lines similar to: "That son of a bitch put a hole in my Versace!"
It was like John Woo was sitting with a board of his advisors, said "we had a kick ass first movie and the production company has given us a huge financial backbone to make a sequel... The matrix just came out and they had cool special effects, so lets go out and just blow a lot of sh!t up, do a lot of wire fighting, make a couple of the actors wear laytex masks to impersonate eachother, and slap "Mission Impossible II" on the movie poster and call it a day.."
Oh boy, that wasn't the case with the third movie at all.. It actually got back into the Spy genre of the first one and was the kind of movie that I hoped MI:II was going to be... It was directed by J.J. Abrams, creator of Lost and Alias. Apparently there was a reference to Lost in the movie somewhere, but I didn't catch it... If I had to guess, it would have been "the numbers" on a license plate, or on his window doodles in Shanghai... But I didn't see them.
Long story short, go see this movie. Tom Cruise plays a great Ethan Hunt in this one (thank god he cut his hair..), Luthor is back for a third time as Hunt's tactical computer genius, there's rocket launchers, and exploding brain implants.... Everything that will make a growing boy wish he was a secret agent for the Impossible Mission Force.
